Frequently Asked Questions

People hire a coach because:
• They want more.
• They want to grow.
• They want it easier.
It's as simple as that. Coaches help a client get all three. Quickly.

What is Life Coaching?
Life Coaching is motivational, inspiring, positive, exciting and action driven. Life coaching helps you look at where you are now and where you’d like to be; then it assists you in building a bridge to reach your desires. Through the teachings of Self Love and Forgiveness, life coaching helps raise your awareness and allows you to go further in life than you ever thought possible.

So, is this magic? Does the Life Coach just wave a magic wand and make everything wonderful?
Sadly, no, and it has to be said that coaching involves a lot of action and commitment. However, if you are ready for change in your life, the benefits can be enormous, and you will start to live an “Effortless Life.”

Sounds good so far, but what if you’re unsure if your issues are suitable for coaching?
The only way to be certain is to have an informal chat with us. However, have a look at the following statements and see if they apply to you. Shift and Wake Up offers a 30-minute informal chat for those wanting to know more. Please contact us to schedule an appointment.

• I've had a problem or challenge that's been around for a long time, but I've never managed to sort it out.
• I have a pressing issue to resolve but don't know where to start.
• Things are OK for me but could be better.
• I seem to spend all of my life trying to catch up.
• My life seems to be all work and no play.
• I think things would be great if only I had … a new job, I could lose weight, I could sell my house … etc.
• I would just like to run my ideas past someone who isn't going to pour cold water over them all the time.
• I feel isolated in my job but find it difficult to talk to colleagues in case they take it as a sign that I've failed.
• I'm hiding relationship problems because I can't share them with family and friends, as this would feel disloyal to my partner.
• I'm in a rut and feel too drained to get out of it.
• I've lost direction.
If you've identified with one or more of these statements, then life coaching could make the difference you're looking for.

The Benefits of Having a Life Coach
You get to talk about your problems and challenges with someone who's not going to interrupt you, make judgments about you, criticize what you're saying, or offer opinions based on their own experience.

• If you're feeling negative and lacking in motivation, your coach will help you challenge limiting assumptions and beliefs you may be holding about the situations you find yourself in that are stopping you from moving forward.
• Life coaching will give you the space and time to think through your challenges and options.
You can use your life coach as a sounding board for all of your ideas, like your business plan, what to put in a presentation, how to have a successful interview, how to start a new hobby, your new fitness regime … the list is endless.
• If you've lost direction, your coach will help you focus by setting you up with some highly effective exercises to help you identify what you'd like to have, be and do.
• If you've got a nagging doubt about what you're doing in life or things just don't feel right, but you don't know why, it may be that you’re not sticking to your values – the things that are most important to you – like achievement, freedom, success, caring for others, peace of mind etc. Your coach will help you discover your true values and help you work on a plan for fulfilling them.
• Everything you say will be in total confidence.

Your coach will offer suggestions if it is appropriate and something you would welcome.

How Does Life Coaching Work?
Coaching can be face to face or on the telephone. You will meet/ring your coach at a pre-arranged time for weekly sessions, which can last between 30 and 90 minutes.

During that time, your coach will establish what area you want to discuss, and encourage you, with a series of questions to set a goal. With guidance from your coach, you will explore various options open to you that might enable you to take a step nearer to your goal.

Life Coaching has helped many who have been suffering from being overweight, relationship turmoil, infidelity, career transitions, loss of spiritual connection, and lack of confidence.

It is your turn to learn how to create the life you are here to live – a life without suffering and pain, a life with love, joy and effortless flow of abundance. It is possible, and the first step is saying “Yes” to your spirit.

Do coaches work on personal goals or business/professional goals?
Usually both. The coach is the only professional trained to work with all aspects of your life. This is handy because very often, if something is bothering you at work, it is affecting your personal life as well and vice versa. Some clients prefer to spend more time focusing on their business goals, while others may want to focus on personal goals. How you use your coaching call is up to you!

Where does the coach focus with an average client?
We focus where the client wants us to focus. Your goals are our goals – although we might have some radical suggestions for how to reach your goals more quickly. Sometimes, in order to be more successful in business, you need to do some personal work. So don’t be surprised if you get some personal assessments and quizzes!

Why is life coaching so popular?
• People are tired of doing what they "should" do and are ready to do something special and meaningful for the rest of their lives. Problem is, many can't see it, or if they can, they can't see a way to reorient their life around it. A life coach can help them do both.
• People are realizing it is possible to accomplish goals that might have once felt out of reach. A coach is not a miracle worker (well, they are, sometimes) but a coach does have a large tool kit to help the Big Idea become a Reality.

Shouldn’t I be able to reach my goals on my own?
We’ve been taught that "hard work and doing it on your own" are the keys to finding life, success, money, or happiness. Most people believe they must sacrifice something to attain what they want. Some people sacrifice their health, their time to enjoy life, or their relationships. None of this is necessary. You can have it all, but maybe not all right this minute! And, with coaching, you’ll find you don’t have to sacrifice anything to get what you want. You may need to change a few things, true, but clients find they have more time with their family and friends, more money, more opportunity, and are more successful at work when they seek the assistance of a life coach.

Athletes, performers, CEOs and presidents know they can’t do it alone. They know they need a trained professional or even a team of experts to help them determine the best direction and to provide objective support and feedback. Without this, it is almost impossible to achieve excellence. No athlete would consider going to the Olympics without the support of a coach. The extra edge the coach provides makes all the difference. Why shouldn’t you have this same advantage?

Why would people who are already successful hire a coach?
Nobody really needs a coach, but many people want one! Are you doing what you most enjoy? Are you tolerating or putting up with anything? Is life easy or are you struggling? Are you on the path to financial independence? Do you have what you really want? Most people can expect a lot more out of their lives when they have worked with a life coach. Coaching really speeds things up so hold on to your hat!

Can a dependency be created between coach and client?
No. The client can utilize the coach to maximize an opportunity or accelerate their personal growth, yet not be dependent on the coach. Anyone who has big goals can benefit from the structure and support of a coach, so in that sense, a coach is “needed,” but as far as creating an emotional or psychological dependency, not to worry. Coaches work with people who are healthy and successful on their own.

Can coaching hurt someone?
No. The client is always responsible for his or her own life. Clients make their own decisions and take their own actions. Coaches provide positive support and encouragement. While a coach might challenge you to think differently or suggest that you try a different or even radical approach than you would normally take, the client must decide whether to take the action or not. Coaches do not in any way control the client's thoughts, actions or life. If you feel bad after a coaching call, for any reason, let your coach know about it. It is probably a miscommunication or it could be that this coach’s style is not working for you. If this happens consistently, try a different coach. You should feel uplifted and motivated to take action at the end of each coaching call. You should certainly feel good about yourself and your accomplishments.

Can I hire a coach for a short-term, special project?
Yes. Some clients hire a coach to help them achieve a specific objective or project. Many clients choose to continue working with their coach after their initial goals are accomplished because there are even more interesting things to do!

How long must I commit to working with a coach?
We recommend a period of one month. Although on average, most people find coaching so beneficial they stay on longer than they initially anticipated. Many coaches ask for a three to six month commitment but usually agree for you to stop immediately if coaching is not working for you right now. Some coaches might ask you to sign a contract or an agreement. This is fine; however, all Shift and Wake Up coaches have agreed you can coach on a month-by-month basis for as long as it is working for you. This does not apply to corporate contracts, which may be for a specific term or project and are negotiated on a case-by-case basis.

How much does coaching usually cost?
Most coaches working with individuals charge about $300 to $700 per month for a 30 to 90 minute call, 3 or 4 times a month. Executive coaches charge more and some clients work with a coach for an hour or two a week. It all works out to about to about $100 to $300 per hour. Corporate coaching costs more – anywhere between $1,000 and $10,000 per month – and usually starts at $500 an hour. Corporate coaching may include on-site programs.
